Where Deutsche Bahn has to intervene in the environment due to construction work, it ensures ecological compensation with targeted measures. For example, biotopes are created and wild horses are used as landscape conservationists.
In the vicinity of Hanau and Aschaffenburg, the so-called Przewalski’s horses ensure that bushes and trees are kept short, preventing the protected areas of the nature reserve from becoming overgrown. At the same time, they create diverse structures and open soil patches. This preserves habitats for many plant and animal species. Such compensatory measures are always used when interventions are unavoidable, such as during the construction of a new tunnel between Aschaffenburg and Würzburg.
