At the DB Group, we are inextricably linked to the almost 200-year history of rail in Germany. This includes a rich cultural heritage, but also the involvement of Deutsche Reichsbahn in the crimes committed by the Nazi regime. Our history has been far from uniformly positive, and we have a lasting responsibility to address this history and ensure that it is not forgotten.
Preserving a culture of remembrance
During the Nazi era, Deutsche Reichsbahn was part of the industrially organized mass murder of European Jews, Sinti and Roma. We believe it is our responsibility to help ensure that this chapter in our history is not forgotten. That is why we see it as our role to help educate people – and younger generations in particular.
Keeping our cultural legacy alive
Rail also has a culturally significant legacy that we believe it is important to protect and preserve. This includes the continuous historical development of both public passenger transport and freight transport. Additionally, there are few companies in Germany who play a more integral role in public spaces than Deutsche Bahn, with our stations and many other properties. We believe that these buildings and monuments, some of which are of historical significance, should be protected and preserved in the best way possible, and dovetailed with modern development in urban areas and public spaces.
