Where Deutsche Bahn has to intervene in the environment due to construction work, it ensures ecological compensation with targeted measures. For example, biotopes are created and wild horses are used as landscape conservationists.
The horses graze on a total of 158 hectares near Hanau and in Aschaffenburg. By keeping bushes and trees short, the animals ensure, in an ecologically sustainable way, that the areas do not become overgrown. At the same time, they create diverse structures and open soil patches. This preserves habitats for many plant and animal species. Such compensatory measures are always used when interventions are unavoidable, such as during the construction of a new tunnel between Aschaffenburg and Würzburg.
