Eco warehouses are an integrated concept, developed by our subsidiary DB Schenker, that enables warehouses to be operated in an energy-efficient manner and greatly reduces CO2 emissions.
Modern technology for more environmental protection
When constructing new warehouses, we follow global standards for sustainable construction. These standards focus on heat insulation, using renewable resources obtainable from the building's surrounding region, harnessing geothermal energy, and installing modern lighting systems, solar energy units and rainwater utilization systems. To ensure that it can continue to optimize its green activities, our employees at DB Schenker collect and record its environmental protection data in a specially created online tool.
50th eco warehouse opened
We opened our 50th eco warehouse in Tilburg, the Netherlands, at the beginning of July 2022. To do so, we completed a full modernization of the existing logistics terminal, which has a size of some 59,000 square meters. In addition to modern insulation technology and motion-controlled LED lighting, the new eco warehouse also has charging stations for electric vehicles and e-bikes. In the future, the terminal will be powered entirely by green electricity. Furthermore, five beehives will be placed to increase the biodiversity around the vicinity.
Green logistics in Europe and around the world
In Bologna, for example, a terminal covering 11,000 square meters was built. It is equipped with LED lighting, state-of-the-art insulation technology and a rainwater recycling system. The eco warehouses in Cork and in Dublin, Ireland, feature motion-controlled LED lighting, charging stations for employees' electric vehicles and use power from renewable energies. For example, the eco warehouse in Dublin features solar lighting for the pedestrians on the site. DB Schenker also operates other eco warehouses in Bournemouth, Doncaster and Hayes in the UK, in France, Austria and in the Netherlands. In Sweden, new eco Warehouses were built in numerous locations. And DB Schenker also operates sustainable warehouses in Finland. In addition to being supplied with renewable power, the sites also have energy-efficient lighting equipment.
With its eco Warehouses, DB Schenker is not only committed to sustainable logistics in Europe, but also worldwide: In Auckland, New Zealand, and Alexandria, Australia, we have built contract logistics warehouses featuring state-of-the-art environmental technology, too. In Dubai we opened a temperature-controlled logistics center with an area of 33,000 m². Over 6,800 solar panels supply the eco warehouse with green electricity. In Singapore, two eco warehouses ensure more sustainability in international logistics, too. Our eco warehouse in Tokyo, Japan, is powered entirely by renewable energies and features a rooftop solar system and motion-controlled LED lighting. We also operate sustainable logistics warehouses in Korea and the Philippines.
CityHub – sustainable deliveries in the city
DB Schenker also has its eye on sustainability in urban logistics. Its CityHub in central Oslo is largely powered by renewable energy from Norwegian hydropower. The goods handled here are delivered throughout the city in cargo bikes and electric trucks operated by DB Schenker.
