Deutsche Bahn has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain to net-zero by 2040. To achieve this goal, the company also relies on technological innovations – for example, in the advanced TrainLab. In two specially designed mobile future laboratories, DB tests new developments directly on moving trains.

Alternative fuels for greater climate protection

The use of the biofuel HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) has been tested in the advanced TrainLab. This fuel, made exclusively from biological residues and waste materials, is now used in many DB trains. For instance, DB Cargo has approved the entire fleet of freight locomotives in Germany for the climate-friendly biofuel.

Modern technology for digital rail transport

Many other tests also take place in the advanced TrainLab. The two end cars of the train are equipped with sophisticated sensors, which can detect objects and obstacles on the track. Camera and radar systems lay the foundation for automated train operations of the future. Additional sensors monitor the tracks and switches, enabling wear and damage to be detected in time and addressed promptly.

    ETCS for automated train operation

A variety of antennas allow, among other things, real-time vehicle tracking and reception of the 5G network. Data can thus be transmitted up to a hundred times faster. Furthermore, DB has integrated the new European Train Control System (ETCS) into the advanced TrainLab. Ensuring safe travel, this train protection technology replaces stationary signal lights located along the track and is another essential component in automatic train operation.

With the advanced TrainLab, Deutsche Bahn brings new technologies onto the rails faster and in a more developed state, driving digitalization in rail transport forward. This results in higher rail capacity and, ideally, less road traffic.

New shine with environmentally friendly coatings

New paint systems are also tested in the advanced TrainLab. The special powder coatings are not only highly durable but also free of harmful solvents, making them environmentally friendly.
