Many of Deutsche Bahn’s operational facilities must function around the clock – even during a power failure. Without signal boxes, stations, and radio systems, train traffic is impossible. That’s why so-called standby power systems step in during emergencies.
Where diesel generators were once used, fuel cells are increasingly taking over today. By combining hydrogen and oxygen, they produce environmentally friendly electricity. For example, a corresponding standby system with fuel cells has been successfully in operation for several years at Maulbronn West station in Baden-Württemberg, ensuring climate-friendly and safe operation of the signal box.
