In order to achieve its climate protection target and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Deutsche Bahn is also relying on modern TRAXX locomotives. These are quieter and consume less fuel than their predecessor models. This is mainly due to the diesel-electric multi-engine concept, in which the four diesel engines can be controlled individually.

The engines supply the required power to the generators, which in turn supply the electric traction motors with power as required. The locomotives also have modern exhaust gas treatment systems in the form of diesel particulate filters and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology.

The TRAXX locomotives are used by DB for long-distance and regional services and are also in operation on the Südostbayernbahn in Bavaria.
