The capercaillie is considered an endangered species in Germany. To protect it, Deutsche Bahn has improved the living conditions for this ground-dwelling bird in the Seelenwald along the Black Forest Railway in Baden-Württemberg.
Targeted vegetation measures are intended to provide the capercaillie with a safe habitat: new clearings have been created and grasses and moss have been planted. In doing so, DB has created a high-quality biotope in the Seelenwald, where it is hoped the bird species will once again grow.
