The Apollo butterfly is one of the rarest butterfly species in Europe. It mainly lives on stony terrain in mountain landscapes. Largely as a result of humans' impact on nature, the Apollo is an endangered species, and it has been protected since 1936. This is reason enough for us to conserve the population living in the foothills of the Swabian Jura and safeguard its preservation.
A railway embankment built in the 1930s has been the butterfly's sole habitat in Baden-Württemberg for several decades and is one of the last refuges of its kind anywhere in Germany. We keep the mossy vegetation there low to give the small colony of Apollo butterflies a chance to grow. We truly wish to support the survival of this rare species.
