Environmental sustainability at work means more than just using recycled paper. At Deutsche Bahn, we make sure our employees' everyday office life is environmentally friendly and saves resources. Our green office practices range from purchasing sustainable office materials to using energy-efficient printers.
Green office supplies
We have defined minimum ecological requirements for the purchase of office supplies that are identified as ecologically sustainable on our marketplace. These include the use of recyclable materials, renewable raw materials, the use of reusable and refillable products and the avoidance of disposable products.
Our employees can conveniently purchase their office supplies and equipment online on DB's own DB Marktplatz platform. Particularly environmentally friendly items, such as writing pads made from recycled paper, are marked in the store with our This is green. logo and are therefore easily recognizable. We rely on well-known environmental certification processes, such as those from Blue Angel, FSC and EU Ecolabel. All of these processes ensure compliance with high environmental standards.
Energy-efficient printers
Wherever possible, we avoid using paper and use digital options at the office instead. When we can't avoid using paper, we reduce our consumption and use recycled paper. We are also converting our printer fleet to energy-efficient devices and are reducing the number of printers we have.
As part of our lifecycle management process, we have already replaced around 70% of our printers with energy-efficient devices. We plan to replace all of our printers by the end of 2025. Thanks to significantly lower average power consumption, we will be able to save around 30 percent energy across the entire printer fleet in the future. All new devices also carry the Blue Angel certificate.
If a printer is defective, we refurbish it professionally and in compliance with data protection regulations. For example, we replace individual parts in our workshops and make the devices fit for use. In this way, we ensure sustainable use and extend the life cycle.
