Geothermal energy is an environmentally friendly way to heat buildings in winter and cool them in summer. One of the great advantages of geothermal heat is that we can use it at any time and in any weather.
We already exploit this source of power at our green stations in Kerpen-Horrem and Lutherstadt Wittenberg, and also at Buchloe station in Bavaria.
We are also testing pilot projects that use geothermal energy to keep switches, or points, free of snow and ice in winter. One such project is up and running in Heimbach in Rhineland-Palatinate. This can reduces energy consumption compared to conventional systems.
