Concrete ties, are vital for keeping train tracks in position. An average of more than two million ties are used at DB every year. Whenever possible, therefore, we recondition them.
In the past few years, we used around 230,000 recycled ties a year. Until 2030 we want to increase the share of recycled ties up to 30 percent.

Ties that can no longer be used in Deutsche Bahn's rail network are processed and reused elsewhere as valuable building materials.
Old ties, new purpose
The DB Bahnbau Group focuses on innovation and recycling. Disused concrete ties are refurbished and used as stable pillars for charging infrastructure. Our so-called "charging ties" are used instead of prefabricated foundations and conventional charging columns - a resource-conserving alternative. In summer 2024, they were installed for the first time at a DB Bahnbau Group site in Berlin, demonstrating how clever solutions enable sustainable progress. There are also plans to use "charging ties" at other locations in the future.
