Deutsche Bahn has been committed to preserving biodiversity in Germany for many years and in a variety of ways. For example, it has been cooperating with the Bergwaldprojekt e.V. association (Mountain Forest Project) since 2009 under the motto "Protecting our forests together".
Together with many volunteers, Deutsche Bahn employees and trainees have planted many thousands of trees in recent years to create a resilient mixed forest and promote a healthy climate. This not only strengthens the team spirit, but also the understanding of the interconnections between biodiversity and forest ecosystems.
Get on board and donate trees
In addition to these voluntary efforts by employees, DB customers also take part in numerous fundraising campaigns. For example, travelers in the BahnBonus loyalty program can redeem their points for tree rewards. And in the on-board restaurants, ten cents are donated directly to the mountain forest project for selected dishes.
A track record for forests and the climate
Thanks to the various campaigns, DB and the association have been able to make a valuable contribution to strengthening the forest ecosystem since the start of the cooperation.

548000 new trees planted since 2009
Since 2009, a total of around 548,000 trees have been planted and 220 hectares of close-to-nature forest have been restored (as of 2024). This support is more important than ever, as the German forest is not doing well. The trees are struggling due to drought and extreme weather events such as storms. Together with customers and employees, DB is therefore making an active contribution to preserving and strengthening the forest ecosystem.
Outstanding commitment
The association has been making an important contribution to strengthening our forests for over 30 years. Bergwaldprojekt e.V. was recognized for this work in the UN Decade of Forests competition. The official award ceremony took place in April 2024. The award was presented by the Federal Ministry for the Environment and the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation. The UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration highlights how crucial this decade is in the fight against the climate crisis and global species extinction.
