To manage DB’s ecological transformation, Deutsche Bahn relies on a wide range of environmental IT systems. One of these is the “Information System for Environmental Protection, Noise, Emissions, and Nature Conservation” – ISU LENa for short. Thanks to ISU LENa, DB always has a clear overview of how rail transport impacts the environment today and in the future – across Germany. For example, when a new rail line is built or maintained, ISU LENa can be used to check in advance what kind of impact this will have on the surrounding area and thus plan protective measures in good time.

Another example is the IT system ZEDAL, DB’s group-wide waste management platform. At the click of a mouse, DB can see the types and quantities of waste generated on trains, at stations, and at other sites. ZEDAL also helps to track and transparently document the handling and disposal of this waste.

DB’s “Environmental Cockpit” supports the strategic planning of its various sustainability goals. This internally developed database enables the collection, calculation, and visualization of all environment-related key data across DB. In this way, the system not only ensures reliable monitoring of environmental metrics but also to manage the DB’s group-wide sustainability targets.
