For many years, Deutsche Bahn has been working together with the environmental organizations BUND, NABU, and VCD within the Destination Nature partnership to relieve sensitive natural landscapes from car traffic.

With tailored offers, holidaymakers are invited to explore nature not by private car but by public transport. Many Destination Nature regions, for example, offer a guest card that allows tourists to use local public transport free of charge. This promotes sustainable tourism in these regions.

    • 24 areas belong to the cooperation of Destination Natur

A total of 24 of the most beautiful national parks, nature parks, and biosphere reserves in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland are part of the Destination Nature regions.

In addition to natural paradises such as the Ammergau Alps, the Eifel, the Harz, or Saxon Switzerland, the Swabian Alb Biosphere Reserve is also part of the partnership. This UNESCO-recognized area attracts visitors with numerous natural sights and unique habitats for animals and plants. With the AlbCard guest card, not only are bus and train rides on site free of charge, but also entry to many attractions.

Honored with the Tourism Committee’s Special Award

In March 2023, the Tourism Committee of the German Bundestag honored Destination Nature with its 2023 Honorary Award. The committee recognized the initiative’s long-standing commitment to sustainable mobility in tourism.

    Destination Nature Award 2023

Regions that serve as role models in linking sustainable tourism with eco-friendly mobility are regularly recognized with the Destination Nature Award.

In 2023, the award went to Saxon Switzerland National Park. The protected area received the prize for its “Mobile Guest Card” and for further expanding its attractive mobility offerings, which are available free of charge with the card. The Allgäu High Alps Nature Reserve was also honored for introducing guest card mobility services in Oberstdorf and the on-demand service “EMMI mobil” in Bad Hindelang. For the first time, a Destination Nature region outside Germany received a special award: the Swiss National Park. Here too, the local public mobility services and exemplary commitment to promoting train travel were recognized.
