Protecting nature and conserving resources are key elements of Deutsche Bahn’s ecological responsibility. Many substances increasingly burden our environment, including microplastics. These tiny plastic particles, present in many products, pose an environmental threat as they are washed into rivers and oceans via local wastewater. Due to their structure, the particles attract environmental toxins and bacteria, contaminating water bodies and oceans.

Moreover, microplastics are ingested by animals and plants, entering the natural cycle and ultimately the human food chain, with as yet unknown consequences. To counteract this, Deutsche Bahn uses 100% microplastic-free hand soap in all long-distance and regional trains.

When selecting products, DB ensures that quality is laboratory-tested. Increasingly, microplastic-free hand soap is also used in depot areas. In addition to hand soap, DB has expanded its range of microplastic-free products for employees. Shunters, track construction workers, construction supervisors, and other DB staff who work outdoors can order and use fully microplastic-free sunscreen from DB’s own workplace shop, the DB Marketplace.

Furthermore, all dishwashing detergents, including hand lotions in DB´s staff cafeterias are microplastic-free. Through these measures, Deutsche Bahn helps reduce microplastic pollution and promotes the health of its employees.
