Since February 2020, Deutsche Bahn has been offering its passengers the opportunity to purchase sustainable mineral water bottles from the Berlin start-up share in the on-board bistros of our ICE and IC/EC trains, thereby funding construction projects for drinking water wells. With each purchase, drinking water is donated to a person in need, as share builds and repairs drinking water wells and hand pumps worldwide from the proceeds.
Deutsche Bahn purchases around 2.3 million bottles of water from share per year. This can finance up to 15 wells annually—at least one well per month. Since the partnership began in 2020, DB and its customers have already funded 53 wells and a permanent water supply for around 25,000 people in eight countries (as of the end of 2024).
Another advantage of the cooperation with share: approximately 38 tons of plastic can be saved annually compared to conventional reusable bottles, thanks to the use of the 0.5-liter reusable bottles. The share bottles consist of 35% recycled plastic.
Enjoy chocolate and do something good
Passengers in 1st class on DB long distance trains receive a "favorite guest" gift. Depending on the season, the assortment includes a chocolate and a cookie from share. The small, lemon-flavored butter cookie is made from high-quality ingredients from Europe, is produced in Germany and contains no palm oil. Only fair trade cocoa is used for the chocolate, which is produced in Belgium and the packaging is recyclable. In addition, every guest gift from share includes a donation to Tafel Deutschland.
