On its path to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, Deutsche Bahn is focusing, among other things, on increasing energy efficiency. As part of this effort, DB is replacing conventional lighting at its stations, depots and other buildings with energy-saving and durable LEDs or other efficient lighting systems. Across Germany, lighting has already been optimized at many stations, significantly reducing energy consumption. Switching to LEDs helps conserve resources and save electricity.

This includes lighting for wayfinding systems, display cases, and ceiling lights — such as at Essen station, where the entire ceiling lighting in the entrance hall was replaced.

At the Siegburg/Bonn station, lighting was also converted to energy-efficient LEDs. For new installations, DB relies directly on LED technology for station lighting systems, while existing systems are being gradually upgraded. LEDs are not only used at stations but also in depots and warehouses. Since early 2025, DB has also been supplying all stationary facilities in Germany powered by DB Energie with 100% renewable electricity. This includes all stations, maintenance depots and other office buildings.
