Deutsche Bahn is increasingly focusing on ecologically sustainable criteria for both its own and leased office buildings. This includes the careful use of resources as well as the ecological operation of properties. For example, DB has converted the energy supply of its buildings and facilities to renewable energy. This means that all office buildings—as well as stations, maintenance depots, and facilities in Germany supplied by DB Energie—are supplied with 100% renewable energy.

In addition, DB relies on recognized certifications for its buildings, such as DGNB certification and the LEED seal. The German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) certification evaluates the entire life cycle of a building. To achieve this, various sustainability criteria from up to six categories must be met: ecology, economy, sociocultural and functional aspects, technology, processes, and location. The “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design” (LEED) certification, for example, evaluates criteria such as location and environment, energy and atmosphere, water, materials and resources, interior quality, innovation, and regional priorities. Depending on the fulfillment of certain criteria, buildings can collect points and obtain LEED certification.

Several of DB’s leased office buildings have already been recognized for exemplary implementation in terms of sustainability.

Gold Standard for the Corporate Headquarters

The so-called Bahntower, Deutsche Bahn’s corporate headquarters at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, underwent extensive renovation from late 2021 to fall 2024 and holds the DGNB Gold Standard. In addition to a completely new spatial concept throughout the building, emphasis was placed on the resource-saving use of materials. For example, double floors, interior blinds, partition walls, and parts of the mechanical, electrical, and sanitary systems were reused wherever possible. Furthermore, the entire building was converted to energy-efficient LED lighting. Heating and cooling are controlled according to weather conditions, and meter readings and evaluations are carried out using modern energy management software.

DB InfraGO Headquarters – Office Building with Gold Certification

Since its modernization in 2021, DB InfraGO’s headquarters in Frankfurt’s central station district has held a LEED Gold Certificate. The building meets various sustainability criteria, such as the use of recycled materials. Among other things, the carpets are made of recycled PET and carry the Blue Angel seal. The office furniture is also made from certified and recycled materials.

Gasometer EUREF Campus – Efficient and resource-saving

Deutsche Bahn is a tenant in the Berlin Gasometer in Schöneberg, occupying around 28,000 square meters across twelve floors with various business units. The building on the EUREF Campus has been awarded the KfW Efficiency House 55 certification. This means that it requires only 55% of the energy compared to a conventional new building. This is achieved, among other things, through triple glazing, internal sun protection, effective thermal insulation, the use of smart metering, and locally generated renewable energy.
