Deutsche Bahn has committed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain to net-zero by 2040. A key lever in achieving this goal is increasing the share of renewable energy.

By 2038, DB will convert its DB traction power mix up to 100% renewable electricity. In electrified DB long-distance services, our passengers already travel with 100% renewable power in Germany. Since early 2025, all stations, maintenance depots, office buildings, and sites in Germany supplied by DB Energie have also been powered with 100% renewable electricity. This includes signal boxes, point heating systems and track area lighting, for example.

Berlin Central Station was one of the first locations to switch to 100% renewable electricity.

DB began converting the electricity supply of its buildings and facilities to renewable electricity in 2019. Initially, 33 stations were switched to renewable energy, including the 15 largest DB stations such as Berlin, Munich, and Cologne.
