With around 28,000 hectares, Deutsche Bahn is one of the largest forest owners in Germany. This includes the Elmer Forest in East Hessen. This section of forest was already established 100 years ago on the embankment flanking along the railline between Hanau and Fulda. For decades, no chainsaw has been used here.
As a result, a near-natural forest has developed, allowed to grow without human intervention. Through this measure, Deutsche Bahn earns eco-points, which can later be used as part of ecological compensation measures.
