We tune our diesel locomotives. Not to make them faster – but to make them more efficient. And, as a result, more eco-friendly. It's not possible to do away with diesel vehicles for everything. That's why we're continuously working on solutions to reduce our switching locomotives' fuel consumption.
Together with partners DB Cargo developed a process called ECO Tuning. ECO Tuning optimizes the engine control system to cut fuel consumption while maintaining the same level of performance. Many of our switching locomotives have already been optimized in this way in Germany and the rest of Europe. And the tuning process only takes 15 minutes. Locomotives don't even need to make a special trip to the maintenance depot for this, thanks to a specially developed mobile data-flash unit, which sends software updates by smartphone.
