We dish up sustainability

Deutsche Bahn is not just one of the largest providers of sustainable mobility, but is also consistently expanding its sustainable food service portfolio. We thus offer our customers and employees green catering all the way.

Green menu in on-board food service

Since March 2022, more than 50% of the food offered in our on-board bistros and restaurants has been vegetarian or plant-based.

For instance, meat substitutes, vegetarian snacks and organic oat-based porridges ensure more sustainability in the product range. In addition, three fully organic seasonal specials are now on the menu, which change every three months. The new dishes complement our existing sustainable products. In our on-board food service and in selected DB lounges, for instance, we have been offering our customers an oat drink made by Oatly as an alternative to cow's milk since early 2022.

Enjoyment with a clear conscience

In addition, our customers can also enjoy our selection of coffee, tea and hot chocolate with a clear conscience, as it consists of 100% fair trade products. The hot drinks in our on-board food service have been fair trade since 2017. The fair trade seal stands for products that have been grown and traded fairly.  It provides farmers with security thanks to stable incomes and premiums for community projects.  The rules underlying fair trade also prohibit the use of highly toxic pesticides or genetically modified seeds.

Last year, around 10.3 million cups of coffee and around 1.2 million tea bags were sold on board our ICE and Intercity trains. Similarly, our DB lounges, ServiceStores and staff cafeterias also only serve hot coffee or tea-beverages that are certified.

Sustainable energy boost all day long

For our employees, we also offer a varied and sustainable range of dishes in our company cafeterias: from inexpensive daily specials to exquisite menu items, there is always a choice of vegetarian and regular seasonal dishes, such as dishes containing asparagus, pumpkin or chanterelles, to suit every budget. When purchasing supplies for our cafeterias, we pay attention to saving resources. Dishes prepared with sustainably produced food are specially marked.

In this way, we at DB are making a strong contribution to better nutrition and actively supporting resource conservation together with our customers and employees.
