Rain, pollen, limescale, insects – our trains collect quite some blemishes. Every day, thousands of our long distance and regional trains are in service regardless of the weather. To make sure our drivers and passengers can always see out of the windows, trains have to take frequent trips to our washing facilities.
Most of these employ a circular system for their washing water, and in some units up to 60 percent of the water is reused. In Berlin-Grünau, a new washing plant was put into operation for the new S-Bahn Berlin trains, which can even reuse up to 90 percent of the service water used.
In many places we use a biological cleaning process on the water using bacteria. Whenever possible, we use well water or rainwater as this avoids the need to use up drinking water supplies.
