Deutsche Bahn has committed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain to net zero by 2040. This means that even in logistics processes, the most climate-friendly solutions are already being used today—such as cargo bikes.
From the warehouse to the trains
In Dresden, for example, DB Services employees transport cleaning materials quickly and environmentally friendly using electric cargo tricycles from the warehouse on the site to the trains. The cargo tricycles are highly loadable and maneuverable, making it ideal for on-site use. Another advantage: DB Services employees without a driver’s license can also travel climate-friendly — completely car-free. The bikes were put into service in February 2025 and are now available to all employees at the Dresden site.
Cargo bikes for new last-mile logistics
In Berlin, Deutsche Bahn is testing deliveries by cargo bike as part of the Smart City initiative. Together with the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district and the Ministry of Transport, an innovative and sustainable logistics hub was established — the Micro-Hub Te-Damm. Goods are delivered, stored, and then distributed to customers climate-friendly via cargo bikes. Additional micro-hubs have been opened at Berlin Alexanderplatz station and in Hamburg-Altona. The micro-hubs are also available as storage locations for other logistics companies and retailers, allowing residents to pick up their ordered groceries directly from the hub.
