To conserve resources and reduce packaging waste, Deutsche Bahn increasingly relies on reusable tableware in its long-distance trains, DB Lounges, staff restaurants, and DB’s own catering service.

Reusable tableware in on-board food service

Hot drinks, main courses, and snacks have been served in high-quality porcelain since early 2023 in the on-board bistro and the to-go area. All other drinks are served in glasses.

Porcelain and glass as reusable options are durable and, due to their natural raw materials, more environmentally friendly than single-use packaging. For passengers, the reusable service is free and does not require a deposit. Customers who bring their own reusable cup receive a 20-cent discount per hot beverage. Single-use packaging remains available upon request.

    Tableware with a deposit system

In many DB staff restaurants, employees can also benefit from a deposit system for tableware. Hot drinks and meals can be taken away and consumed elsewhere or later. For smaller snacks like fruit salad, smoothies, and yogurt, environmentally friendly deposit jars have been available for some time. The jars can be returned at any DB staff restaurant.

With the new deposit system from DB partner RECUP, there is another eco-friendly alternative to single-use tableware. For a deposit, DB employees can take drinks and meals in a RECUP cup or REBOWL reusable bowl. After use, the empty cups and bowls can be returned at the DB staff restaurant or at any RECUP partner location. Thousands of collection points nationwide refund the deposit.

    Clear environmental benefits

RECUP cups and bowls are made from 100% recyclable plastic. Unlike conventional single-use tableware, reusable items can be washed and reused hundreds of times. Additionally, the deposit tableware requires little energy to manufacture. The German government has awarded the “Blue Angel” environmental label to RECUP and REBOWL in recognition of this.

By using the reusable system, Deutsche Bahn sustainably reduces single-use items in its staff restaurants and, together with employees, makes a significant contribution to sustainability and resource protection.
