At Deutsche Bahn, food waste does not simply end up in the trash – it is used to generate energy. Leftovers are produced daily in DB’s staff restaurants. Together with its cooperation partner LOGEX, DB ensures that these are put to good use. Food waste has a high energy ingredients thanks to its carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.

In dedicated facilities, the leftovers are converted into biogas and further utilized in combined heat and power plants. This produces heat, which can be used via district heating or fed into the power grid. The residue remaining at the end of the fermentation process in the biogas plant is used as organic fertilizer in agriculture.
