Not every transport operation can be carried out entirely by rail. This is why Deutsche Bahn offers its freight transport customers a carbon neutral solution for their international transports.

With the Climate+ offer, DB Cargo ensures that 100% renewable power or the biofuel HVO is used, depending on the route and requirements. The remaining greenhouse gas emissions caused by a transport – for example by a pre-or post-carriage by truck – are offset by supporting selected sustainability projects around the world. To this end, DB Cargo calculates the greenhouse gas emissions of the entire transport chain.

Strict quality standards for more climate protection

The promotion of climate protection projects complements the use of renewable power and biofuel. All sustainability projects selected as part of Climate+ must meet strict quality standards. Together with DB Energie GmbH, DB Cargo invests in high-quality offsetting certificates (VERs and selected CERs) from projects that are certified according to strict standards such as VCS + Social Carbon/CCBS or Gold Standard. The selected projects promote, for example, the expansion of renewable energy and thus contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable development in the project regions is also strengthened through technology transfer and the establishment of local economic structures. This benefits both residents and companies in the region.
