In order to achieve German and European climate protection goals, a sustainable shift to rail transport is needed. After all, electrified rail transport is one of the most climate-friendly forms of mass mobility. A journey on a regional train emits around 75% less greenhouse gas emissions than a journey in a car.
What's more, trains carry significantly more people than cars and also have a longer lifespan. DB looks for environmentally sustainable innovations when purchasing new regional trains. In the case of Siemens' Mireo trains, for example, the majority of the trains can be recycled at the end of their service life after a good 30 years. In addition, electric trains, for example, feed the energy generated from breaking back into the traction current network and use energy-saving, modern power electronics. Older vehicles are also made fit for climate-friendly use on the rails through the installation of energy-saving LEDs and improved thermal insulation.
